The Gang Aid

As widely announced, this December 2014 there will be a Band Aid song released in support of the people affected by the Ebola virus which is killing thousands of human beings in Africa. These poor people must be supported in any way we can, they are physically dying down there and we should all be opening our wallets, buy a copy of the song and support the cause. The artists singing the song are the best in the planet, most of them are new generation and some are old generation and it is a great thing they have managed to combine together and sing for charity.

Thank you guys, but.

But.
But.
But.

When I see artists doing charity work I always am a but suspicious, many times in the past it seemed to me they were doing charity things just to get free media exposure, raise their profiles and by "donating" some of their spare time make us open our wallets. I have so searched the web and checked how much these artists are worth, here is the link I have used starting with Bono
http://www.therichest.com/celebnetworth/celeb/bono-net-worth/
600 million. And then you read this article, and think about things
http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/entertainment/music/news/u2-frontman-bonos-tax-avoidance-depriving-poor-28509721.html
Sending money oversea is not just a musician thing, it is a common practice used by UK millionaires in general
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2161394/The-1-tax-haven-Comedian-Jimmy-Carr-3-3m-Jersey-avoidance-scheme.html
No much to laugh about, the taxes we pay support people in the UK providing services like Hospitals, Fire Services, Schools and Security Forces, but the matter doesn't seem to bother these multimillionaires. I don't want to pick on the individual's wealth but I have done a little research about UK artists and I was amazed about how many of them have financial heaven links in order to avoid paying taxes.

But let's go straight to my point.
I do spend lots of my spare time and money out of my pocket to fundraise for our organization called Luca Loves Life Appeal
https://en-gb.facebook.com/LucaLovesLifeAppeal
which helps funding various charities in support of terminally ill children in UK and worldwide, I don't want anything back in exchange for that, I do it because it is something I really believe in, Luca was my son. I fundraise through music, on a much lower level than Band Aid, let's say if I play a gig I may raise 80/100 pounds just to give you an idea. Talking about the finished product, probably the best song I have ever done is called My Queen, it was released the 11/11/2014 on what it should have been Luca's 4th birthday. The cost of this production was less than 100 pounds, it was 100% financed by myself and 100% of the earnings including the earnings from the copyrights go to Luca Loves Life Appeal in help of terminally ill children and families in UK and worldwide when we can.

For us "normal" people, for us that live ordinary lives doing ordinary jobs, like I am a self-employed gardener and week end restaurant worker while my wife is a teacher, for us it is very very hard to raise funds, we live normal lives and don't earn mega bucks at all and our circle of friends and family are on the same boat but there is something I would like you to know about fundraising and it is how much businesses can help you. Last year a family friend called Julie decided to run a half marathon in Ealing, London, in order to raise money for our beloved charity called Acorns which supports terminally ill children and families across the region where we live in the West Midlands. The company she works for offered her something amazing; they offered to match up any money she would have fundraised, how good is that? She was sponsored by friends and family and raised an outstanding 1.500 pounds; her company matched that amount up which translates into a real 3.000 pounds given to Acorns in memory of Luca. To raise 3.000 pounds is a massive achievement for a single person but it is nothing if you compare it to Bob Geldof raising 1 million pounds just by talking 5 minutes when he appeared on the XFactor 2014 couple of days ago, 3.000 pounds is what probably a Band Aid singer spends individually on a Saturday night round of aperitifs before going out, I am saying that just to wind them up.

But you that are reading this post, you must know that a worldwide known singer or band is exactly the same thing as a worldwide known business.

Now, to make me believe that this year's singers and producers of the Band Aid song are genuinely into charity work I would like the business/singers to do what Julie's company did, I would like to see them match up the earnings from selling the Band Aid song by financing out of their own pocket with declared earnings whatever money the song will make, if it produces sales for 10 million pounds they should match that up, what do you think? I am sure 10 million pounds is nothing to share between Bono, Bob Geldof, One Direction, Rita Ora etc.. It works out 10 million pounds divided 23 millionaires is less than half a million per person, what difference would it make to a multimillionaire? Not much and it helps to spread the wealth. If this was the case, if they had to match the earnings of the Aid Song how many artists do you think will be singing in it? Not sure, what do you think? It may be none.

So, after a year in which we had to listen on every radio station songs from Bono, Ed Sheeran, Ellie Goulding, Rita Ora etc. on a loop, finally arrived Christmas to give us a break but ooooppppssssss.. We will have to listen to Bono, Ed Sheeran, Ellie Goulding, Rita Ora and so on singing all together, what a bonus.
The really good thing about it is that at least this song will help people who suffer and I love that. I will buy the song because it goes to a very good cause but I would like the singers and producers of this year's Band Aid Song to spread their wealth and match up the earnings otherwise I will be convinced to think the song is just a marketing move for them all to look good in front of the mass, to get a bit of media exposure and involvement into charity work, if they want to prove my point wrong they must match up the earnings from the sales of the song with their own UK tax declared money, or what I am saying is right, they are just doing it for their careers and profiles but they don't really care about Ebola and its victims, which is a nasty thought and  we "normal" people will be paying to help the Ebola victims while the singers will just get the credits. Fair isn't it?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rc-9wGK87k8

There are more considerations to highlight, first is the fact that Bob Geldof is shaming Adele for not taking part of it and making her sound like a heartless woman because she is not helping the Band Aid, Geldof is totally wrong and Adele silently and without appearing to any TV show or else has since made a donation out of her own pocket to Oxfam. She is a real, true star which shouldn't be bullied the way she has been because she is ignoring a man snapping his fingers.
Second consideration is that there are 20.000 people involved in the Ebola crisis in Africa since March, from Doctors to Security Forces, part of which we are already funding with our tax money, we will never know the majority of these workers but they don't need a gang of pop stars to give up a couple of hours of their spare time to sing a song and last thing is YES, Africans do know when Christmas time comes (there are more than 500 million Christians down there).
The Band Aid would have looked much more credible if at least the singers sat down together, took time off work and wrote a new song because this year 2014 is just a karaoke sang by lucky professionals, we all listened to the original version for the past 30 years every Christmas, some of you may still remember Geldof's words "Give us your f***ing money", it worked at that time but back then it was an original song sang by passionate people, this 2014 edition has not passion whatsoever, just some dressed up singers (till contract lasts) showing off. This song is like a soup which has been warmed up too many times but changing the chefs is not going to make it taste the same again and it doesn't seem to me the majority of people on the Gang Aid are that bothered about Ebola, what do you think?

Talking to my wife she said to me I shouldn't feel that I must buy the song, she reminded me that we have a reasonably big monthly direct debit setup with the Red Cross and they are there to help, not only they help the Ebola sufferers but they help for many other disasters anywhere in the world, so by the time I have finished writing this post I may have changed my mind regarding buying the song; do I really want to send this bunch of multi-millionaires living in castles to the altar of saviors of humanity? No.
I so have started to think it would probably be better to make this song a flop purely to raise a point and stop the West describe Africa like a land of pain, suffering and death. Enough is enough.

Merry Christmas dear African brothers and sisters, may God bless you all.

Thank you for reading and please share if you care.

Britain's Got...

I thought to keep this kind of "secret" for a while or just to let know only friends and family about it on the due course but now I feel I shall share it with you all, so let's start from the beginning.
I have been working on a new song called My Queen since early September 2014; I have been producing music for charity in help of Luca Loves Life Appeal
https://www.facebook.com/LucaLovesLifeAppeal?filter=3
Luca was my son, the song is dedicated to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and at the end of it there is a choir sang by local primary school children. During the process of rehearsing and recording the song some of the children started to ask me "Why don't you go to the X Factor, or Britain's Got Talent?" and I always replied I didn't need to. Thinking about it more deeply I said to myself "Why not? What have I got to lose?" So I have filed an application for Britain's Got Talent in the early autumn 2014 and never said it to anyone apart from a close friend.
I was contacted over the phone by a lady I think she was called Jess (or Gemma) from the BGT team who reviewed my application and read my bio, she knew I do music for charity and saw my music videos, she added that I had a great personality and she liked one of my songs called "Why?". I thought it was a good start so I got even more excited and hopeful and said to myself I could do this, I could do anything to help who is in need especially children who suffer. Jess booked me an audition for Tuesday the 28th of October 2014, 9:00am, ICC Birmingham; I started to get really excited then.

Not long after Jess's contact I received a phone call from another lady from BGT called Naomi, she booked me an audition at a different date, Sunday the 26th October 2014, 13:00, ICC Birmingham, I thought it was a bit strange to be booked at two different dates but I never questioned anything. All I had in mind was to raise more funds for Luca Loves Life and then redistribute it to our favourite charities such as Acorns Children's Hospice and help funding the Birmingham Children's Hospital, also to financially help terminally ill children and families across the world. Music for me is a hobby, I make a living doing gardens in the day and working part time in a restaurant at night; the night before the audition I worked in the restaurant as I usually do every week end and finished at about 1 so I was pretty tired the morning after but that didn't matter to me.

I woke up, had a nice shower, shave, smartly dressed with black tie and fresh white shirt, tuned the guitar, everything was ready, popped to see Luca at the cemetery to get some extra courage and drove to Birmingham City Centre destination ICC Birmingham with the lovely company of my Angel.
I knew I could do it.
Once in town outside the ICC the queue was already building up so I put myself in the line, I was holding my guitar in one hand and a Luca Loves Life Appeal money collection bucket on the other, I could hear some people talking about how nervous they felt, but I was just cool, I knew I could do it. There were people with children, a man with a dog, street artists, I made a special friend, a young black man in his early 20s from Oxford who came by train and was going to perform his dance moves and we got on really well, he noticed I had a ladybird on my shoulder and I replied to him it was going to be good luck so I kept it. My new friend started to call me "Ladybird Man" and we both were having fun and a bit of a laugh.

After the queuing in the cold (and we have been lucky it didn't rain) we went inside the ICC building to queue again, then we were moved outside to do some filming and queuing again, then we were put back inside to queue. And wait. And wait. And wait. The time was going really slow and the man with the dog was still there, I was thinking how he could keep his dog without pissing anywhere? God knows. Some children were getting restless and particularly tired falling asleep in their parent's arms while waiting for their audition and I started to think why they have to wait so long? Why do that? Surely for children the BGT producers could think of a more comfortable way to see them, but never mind. I get pretty uncomfortable when people don't take special care of children, but that's may just be me.
After all the queuing and after 5 and a half hours since I first arrived my audition time finally came. Me and another two people were scouted to the audition room, after few minutes I was standing outside the audition door, someone came out of the room and said "Who wants to go first?" I said "Me". Could not wait not longer, let's just do it now.
I walked in the room with my Luca Loves Life bucket on my left hand, the guitar on the other and a ladybird on my back! Yes, let's do it. A woman and a man were sitting in front of me.
I don't really remember the whole conversation word by word but this is roughly how it went:
"Hi my name is Antonello, I am 38 years old, Italian relocated to UK about 12 years ago and I am a fundraiser for Luca Loves Life Appeal. The Appeal was created to help my son Luca who was diagnosed with a disease called Tay Sachs. The disease made him turn deaf, blind and motionless, he never spoke. During the time I was looking after him I have started to play the guitar again and write songs to entertain him. Luca passed away in my arms the 2/2/2013 at Acorns Children's Hospice at the age of 26 months and it has been a rollercoaster of emotions for me but I have carried on with the music legacy to keep his memory alive and to help the children who suffer, in fact I have written and recorded 18 songs in a single year, all the profits I make goes to charity via Luca Loves Life in actual fact my songs are available for download and the money goes directly to Luca Loves Life as well as the money from the copyrights. We strongly have fundraised for Acorns Children's Hospice and Birmingham Children's Hospital. I have done charity runs and all sort of things to raise money but I found that music is the way forward, especially because is not fair to keep asking friends and family to sponsor me all the time"
The woman was listening carefully and she said that what I do is really good. Then I said:
"I am going to perform one of my songs called "Why?", it was written back in May this year"
At this point guys, believe me, I sang it from the deepest, deepest part of my heart, the words were coming out like a waterfall and my fingers where touching the guitar strings like I was stroking my daughter's cheek after saying "I love you dad", and all I was thinking was how much I could help the poorly children if I did get through. I sang half song, I thought it was enough, I felt I pulled one of the greatest performances of my life.
The woman looked at me and said it was really good. I smiled.
Then she added that this year the competition was really tough and I wasn't good enough. Ouch.
I replied "Did I do anything wrong? Is there anything I am missing or not good?" She said no, but that it was not successful, I was not what they were looking for the program.
"Ok" I thought, she is the producer, she added that what I do is very remarkable and I should carry on with it, I thought "Don't worry darling, I don't need you to tell me that what I do is the right thing, I am not here for that, I am here to raise money for dieing children", but she was one of the show producer and at the end of the day it was her money so I thanked her and off I went, disappointed but I had to accept the verdict which was final.

Got into the van and drove home, once arrived I got my jacket off and found the ladybird still stuck on me, I put her in the conservatory on a leaf of the tomatoes plant I am growing, I thought it was true what people say about ladybirds, they do bring you luck and maybe I was lucky not to be having any link with the producers of BGT. Maybe I was lucky not to have a contract with them, who knows.
How did I feel? Bad, deeply deluded not for myself because I know I am not the best singer or a musician, I was deluded by the woman who judged me even if I knew she was the boss and I must respect her will. My head started to think lots of different things and couldn't stop it, I am just like that.
I started to think about the whole process of the BGT application. I apply for Britain's Got Talent, somebody from the program watches what I do through my YouTube videos and rings me saying one of my songs called "Why?" is really good and she thinks I have a nice personality, she books me an audition, then another person rings me and books me for another day, I go to the audition and after 5:30 hours of mainly queueing standing on my feet a random woman (with all respect, of course) takes 5 minutes to tell me that I am not what they are looking for? Ok I understand that, this is perfectly fine, the show needs the right characters in order for the program to be watched and surely I am not a natural born entertainer, my issue is that BGT producers could find a different way to audition contestants in the early stages. We live in a society where nearly all of us have a pc, or iPad or iPhone, why make thousands of people and children queue outside of a building? Why make all these people get wet by rain, cold, and force dogs to hold their wee? Why people have to travel hundreds of miles just to spend 5 minutes to impress someone which could have done the same on FaceTime or Skype? How can BGT organizers make all this people drive, produce so much carbon emissions, stand outside in the cold to then perform in front of a person who in 5 minutes maybe less will send them home with no particular reason? We don't need to be scientists to understand it is wrong, BGT producers should move forward and embrace technology. I like to watch the program and now I am really curious to know who from Birmingham will be performing in the show and who according to the show agenda is the act that fits with their idea of entertain Her Majesty. And I get even more curious when I think that if a person who cared for his child from cutting his umbilical cord to lowering him down his grave, who held him into his arms till his last breath, who taught himself how to play and sing and wrote 18 songs in a year, who creates from scratch guitar chords to express his feelings, who gives every penny of the music earnings to charities, who loves his family and works hard with his 2 jobs to support it, if this is not talent what does talent means then? If someone like this is not worth showing to the general public who is then? How ever the general public will know about good people in life if the good people are never given a chance? Oh well, it was worth going still and give it a try, I had nothing to lose (apart from my sleep) and in actual fact I didn't lose anything, I also made a new friend and a got a funny new nickname.

Couple of days after, Tuesday the 28th of October at 9:00am I received a text message from a guy called Alan from the BGT show
"Hi Antonello, I’m Alan from Britain's Got Talent. Give me a call when you get to the ICC and I'll take you to your audition. Don't join any queue as you'll get lost. If I don't answer my phone drop me a text and I'll call you back. See you soon!"
I was in the middle of work cutting an hedge and I picked up the message half hour later, I first thought "Wtf is going on?" but I replied
"Sorry Alan am I missing something? I was discharged on Sunday as not successful..."
He replied
"Hi Antonello, of course you were here Sunday. My paperwork is mistaken unfortunately. Thank you so much for coming. I’m sorry you weren't successful but I hope you had a good day. Thanks!"
You know what, I had the feeling that my audition would have had a totally different outcome if I did it on Tuesday, but it was too late for anything now. In frustration I replied to Alan one last time
"Hi Alan thank you too. It would have been great to perform if front of Her Majesty a song I wrote for her, played with Italian mandolins and sang with the help of a local junior school's choir but never mind, I will send her a copy (of my song) and I may see you at the Royal Variety Show anyway ;) I am sure BGT producers picked up much better acts than mine to entertain Her Majesty. Great to audition for BGT. Ciao take care"
Hope I did not upset him or anything, sorry Alan! I know you were just doing your job but I was a bit fuming at that time so please understand me too. I still have the feeling I auditioned the wrong day.

You might ask yourself why I have written a song for the Queen. I grew up in Sardinia, Italy, my parents and relatives always had lots of respect towards Her Majesty and the Royal Family, my old house where my parents still live is full of all sorts of memorabilia from photos, teacups, plates, and I remember when I was a child my grandpa once said to me:
"You know Italian is the language of love, English is the language of freedom"
It took me years to understand what he meant but one day I understood, it is  indeed the language of freedom because in WWII Italy was freed from Fascism and National Socialism (commonly known as Nazi) by American and English speaking guys, brothers, sons, uncles, fathers, cousins. So Thank You, I have lots of respect for British culture and I will teach this value to my daughter so that we will never forget the people who died for us.

For now thanks for reading and if you are thinking about applying for Britain's Got Talent, you must know it could be a complete waste of time, getting wet, spending money, producing co2 and be kicked out with no real reason. It would be nice if with nowadays technology a 5 minutes audition could be comfortably done from your home using a software but never mind... Still I think it is worth giving it a go, you never know, if not other you will gain experience, confidence, and to be honest if you are thinking about life like an easy journey you are wrong, is a constant battle and even if one day you will become the most successful person on earth it does not mean your life will be easy, not at all, more success equals more worries. I believe it is good to apply for programs such as BGT, to test your personality and most of all to test how much you want what you there for, that audition is a life test, if you fail it standing on your own feet you will grow stronger.
In life you must be like a poker player, the most successful are the ones who know how to lose, fact.

All the best to the BGT contestants, I might see you at the Royal Variety Show anyway ;)

Happy 4th Birthday Luca

Birmingham, UK 11/11/2014

Ciao Luca.

As you can hear me every day I am carrying on with the music thing. "Our" guitar has been sealed for ever you already know that but I have bought myself a second hand one from eBay, it was only 30 pounds, you know I can't afford to buy a new good one, mum and Ella picked it up from Warwick as it was collection in person, on that day they were both going to visit Warwick Castle. You know Luca I have kept writing new songs with you in my heart and directing my hands, I think in the past 2 years I have recorded 20 with another 5 at least ready to go but I don't make a living doing music, you know the money goes to children like you and I am happy to carry on doing it but I have to go to work too so that your sister is provided of everything she needs to live a normal life, she must be happy and never mind if I am really down some days; I look at her face, put myself back together and carry on, this world doesn't aloud weaknesses. So, for your birthday this year there is a song coming out called My Queen in honour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, recorded with my "new" guitar, a mandolin Zoe bought me for my birthday back in February this year (which I haven't got a clue how to play it, but still do!) and the help of a school choir from St Nicholas, the school behind the Church of your farewell. This year you should have started school but I suppose you weren’t meant to be taught, you were born teacher.
All these children sang for you my love, in help of poorly children; they will make everybody proud of themselves. I honestly don't know what I do in music and I can't do any more than I am already doing with the small resources and little music knowledge I have but I really hope you will like My Queen and other people will like it too so that I can raise more money in your memory. Just have a listen and if you feel like it send me a direct private message to my heart any time, it is always open for you.

Happy 4th Birthday Luca.

My Queen

My Queen, forgive me if I’m shortening your name, I know
My Queen, don’t wanna (1)misrespect you in any way, oh no
I just want you to be ok, to know how much I love your name
And to see you smile, smile all the time

But who knows when you’re in pain, who knows what you’ve been through
Who knows your tears coming from your soul
You saw everything change, you know how much it takes
To be ahead of times who never end

But you were always there for us, silent on one side
God save My Queen

My Queen, hope you didn’t mind me (2)musicate my thoughts
My Queen, saw you on TV the other day, so nice
To see you sitting next to little George, with a proud face and sparkly eyes
You looked so nice, nice all the time

But who knows when you’re in pain, who knows what you’ve been through
Who knows your tears coming from your soul
You saw everything change, you know how much it takes
To be ahead of times who never end

Mia Regina

Mia Regina, ti ho visto in Tv l’altro giorno, cosi’ bello
Vederti seduta a fianco al piccolo George, con faccia orgogliosa ed occhi luccicanti
Eri cosi’ bella, bella come sempre

I have also sent a copy of the song to Her Majesty, this is the letter I have included:

"To the attention of Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II

Madam,

My name is Antonello Atzori; I am a 38 years old, married to a British wife, father of 2 who relocated to the United Kingdom from Italy about 12 years ago. My young son Luca suffered from Infantile Tay Sachs Disease, a rare form of illness which starts showing its symptoms when the children are about 6-7 months, turning them deaf, blind, motionless, speechless, ultimately die by the age of 4. Luca was born the 11/11/2010, he was diagnosed with Infantile Tay Sachs at the age of 15 months the 07/02/2012 and he died the 02/02/2013 at the age of 26 months. After Luca’s diagnosis with the help of family and friends we set up a fundraising organization called Luca Loves Life Appeal and we raise money for local charities such as Acorns Children’s Hospice and Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
During the time I was looking after Luca I have started to sing and play my old guitar for him, an instrument he loved to hear. I am not a professional singer or guitar player, but inspired by the terribly dramatic situation I was living, this meaning preparing my own child to be taken to his grave while witnessing him lose all his skills, my heart drove me to write songs. After Luca’s death I have recorded one of these songs, all the money was donated to Luca Loves Life Appeal in aid of terminally ill children and families. I then carried on writing new songs and in 1 year I have produced and recorded 18 tracks, all the money raised from the downloads on iTunes, to the copyrights collected and the gigs I play live goes directly to the Appeal’s bank account, no middle man.
I have recently written and recorded a song in Your Honour Madam; I called it “My Queen” and attached to this letter you will find a copy of the song and the video I have made, it is also available for everyone to watch on YouTube. The song is structured with my voice singing, acoustic guitar, mandolin, and a beautiful children’s choir thanks to the help of a local junior school here in Royal Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham. Again, all the money raised from the sales will go to the Appeal and I would really love you to watch the video and listen to my piece of art. It would be a dream for me as well as for all the children singing the choir to be able to perform in front of you.
For this song I have produced 11 DVD’s and 26 CD’s, all these copies will have numbers and will be signed by me. You have received the number 1 of each; I will keep the numbers 2, 11 and 26.

You may be asking yourself why I have written a song for the Queen. I grew up in Sardinia, Italy, my parents, grandparents and relatives had and still have lots of respect towards the Royal Family, in my old Italian house where my parents still live now there are all sorts of Royal Family memorabilia from photos, teacups, plates, and I remember when I was a child my grandpa once said to me:
"You know Italian is the language of love, English is the language of freedom"
It took me years to understand what my granddad meant with his words but I know now, it is indeed the language of freedom because during WWII Italy was freed from Fascism and National Socialism by American and English speaking guys, brothers, sons, uncles, fathers, cousins; this song is my way to Thank You and the British Troops and to show my respect for British culture. I will always teach and remind this value to my 6 years old daughter Ella so that we will never forget the people who died for us. If my granddad died during the war I would not be here myself.
I consider this song my masterpiece, a mix of Italian love and British freedom, hope you will enjoy it.

I have the honour to be, Madam, Your Majesty's humble and obedient servant.

And now, let's wait and see. I know chances are that I will never get a reply but surely I will never have the chance of getting a reply if I don't ask for it, don't you agree?

No Ball(s) Games

English failure in major national football competitions is intriguing, and is mainly a political reflex. I feel bad when I think at this guy’s thrown in the media's den; I don't feel as bad when I think some earn more than 300 thousand pounds a week while I am on 18 thousands a year and I have to deal with lot more rubbish.
There is something we need to understand about why the Brazilians, Spanish, Italians, French and Germans are stronger when they play as a national team and why they achieve better results. Easy. These footballers grow up with a ball in their feet as part of their lifestyle and not as a recreational fitness school. Being Italian myself I know exactly how we live football down there and why our national team is always feared, respected by competitors and why we played 6 world cup finals winning 4 of them, nearly one every 20 years which means almost every Italian generation has enjoyed the experience of the national team lifting the magic cup, I have seen Italy winning the world cup in 1982, losing a final against Brazil in 1994, winning another world cup in 2006 and in between losing 2 european cup finals, in the past 50 years we have every decennial basically played a world cup final, so why is that? Why England didn't play a single final, apart from the 1966 one, whether is in the European or world cup? Because Italians grow their football skills playing in the streets, yes. Same for the Brazilians, or Argentinians and so on. The same happens in other sports like the American NBA for example but I’d like to focus on English football issues.
I see how football is lived around England, you take your kid to a football school, he does the training and then goes back home cause where else can he play? Streets are abused by stressed out speeding car drivers, no caring parent would leave his kid playing outside, no one, so the only "athletic" kids you see nowadays on the streets are the ones in a track suit and hood on hanging out of the corner shop smoking weed asking the passing shoppers to buy them some fags or booze.

So while cars overtook every street and corner of UK the neighbours erected more and more signs saying No Ball Games, meanwhile in the past 50 years builders have constructed hundreds of tower blocks and very little play areas as if these people and families living in the flats are supposed to stay closed inside for the rest of their lives, complete madness. Every neighbourhood MUST have its own recreational ground, it should be by law and every constructor should provide a recreational ground when developing an area; also we should close more roads to traffic and encourage young generations to respectfully enjoy the outdoor life in a safe neighbourhood environment, a child should not have to go to a park to play with his mates or to have a perfect football kit to be able to play football, that's not the way. Where I live in UK there are 4 roads which direct me to the main road, why do I need 4 roads? Who is ever going to drive in 4 roads at the same time? Are 2 not enough? 1 is more than enough. They all go the same way and back, so closing 2 of them to main traffic will not make much difference wouldn’t it? You will be amazed about how younger and older generations will bond together again just from the power of that round ball. At the moment if children play football outside it is considered as anti-social behaviour, if played on the road is understandably an offence liable of fine. But when the park is too far the only other option a child has is to sit in a bedroom, have a chocolate bar and a coke and play football on the PlayStation dreaming of being a footballer while turning 18 in age and weight to then come out of his room, get a degree and be slaved by a corporation who will put him on minimum wages until his 40th and then make him redundant. How sad is that? What a waste of talent. Yes ladies and gentlemen, your best footballers are sitting in a bedroom.
The No Ball Games obviously leads UK to lack of talents, this lack of talented footballers means that the Premiership in order to be competitive has to contract (not buy) foreign players and managers, funny when you know that England created football. This lack of workers has led the country to have only 32% of footballers being born in English land playing in the Premiership, one of the lowest in the world

while the country gets fatter and fatter claiming its spot as 3rd fattest country in the entire world

Of course the lack of footballers links to a lack of managers, it is all chained together. The last footballer born in English land to have won the Ballon D'Or was Michael Owen in 2001 playing for Liverpool, who would you compare him to? Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo or Ronaldinho? Or maybe Bobby Charlton? Before Owen the last Englishmen to win the Ballon D'Or was Kevin Keegan in 1979 playing for Hamburg, in Germany, 22 years apart! The last Manager born in England to have won the Champions League or Uefa Cup was exactly 30 years ago in 1984 when Joe Fagan won the Champions League with Liverpool, the last time an Englishman won the Uefa Cup was in 1997 with Sir Bobby Robson managing Barcelona, old school. First and last world cup won is the well-known 1966 one, after that England didn't even qualify in 1974,1978 and 1994 while the best they have reached is a semi-final lost against West Germany in 1990 Italy's world cup. Most winning managers of the champion’s league are Italians  with 11 titles, England is first for the European Cup with 6 titles followed by Italy with 5.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_UEFA_Cup_Winners'_Cup_winning_managers

Did you ever ask yourself why the big Premiership clubs don't hire English managers? I tell you the true answer, because they don't think they are good enough. So let's focus about the clubs politics, none of the winning ones are owned by Englishmen, Chelsea is Russian, Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Manchester United are American, Manchester City are from the Middle East and the list carries on; these people consider football as a business not as a sport and for them it is worth investing as soon as they make profits, pounds, but there is not a major winning club owned by English born person, the only English thing remained is the name of the teams until the day that the sponsors will replace that too and Manchester United won’t be called like that anymore but it will be the Coca Cola FC, or McDonalds United, or HSBC Rangers, or Q8 Wanderers or more likely it will have the name of a make of beer or a betting shop, the magic combination of booze & gamble, the reasons why British society is crumbling, and seeing Harry Redknapp in a ITV advert selling 666bet products tells you everything, football will turn like horse racing where you look at who wins and what the odds are and that is it, and not rival football team will be intimidated by the "3 Lions" eating a bar of Mars chocolate while Daniel Sturridge sells Subway sandwiches. These people are telling younger generations it is ok to gamble and fatten yourself, for a bit of cash, what a joke! It is wrong.

I have seen England losing against Uruguay in 2014 Brazil world cup and basically been sent back home with 1 match to play still, only 8 days after the start of the tournament and I could just imagine Joe Hart having the eyebrows done during the half time break. I know Italy followed straight after, but it was only 8 years ago when Italy has lifted the world cup as champions of the planet, it will take time to build the next winning generation of footballers and it may be soon or may be not but we will be competitive again, maybe from the next world cup or the one after, we'll see, in the meantime it is fair for other nations to enjoy the pleasure of lifting the trophy.

As a personal view, during this 2014 world cup I have seen some of the English footballers play for themselves and not for the team; play for a country but not for their nation, like if they were playing for any country which happened to be England. Some of them I don't even think wanted to play for England at all which is understandable and in actual fact I don't agree with Ian Wright when he said:
"Footballers who don't want to play for England should be ordered to ring the parents of a soldier who has died in Afghanistan"

http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/worldcup/world-cup-2014-ian-wright-says-footballers-who-dont-want-to-play-for-england-should-be-ordered-to-ring-the-parents-of-a-soldier-who-has-died-in-afghanistan-9559638.html

Firstly: In a multicultural, multi-racial society like the English one, where children are born from Irish, Indian, Russian, Jamaican, Welsh ancestors and the list carries on for ever, people are free not to feel English, if anyone has issues with it they should contact their local MP. Secondly: I have lots and lots of respect towards our Army defending us in UK and abroad but Soldiers who go for example to Afghanistan have voluntarily decided to do so, for money. They must have our respect but in other words they are mercenaries, or more politically correct they are contractors, why should a footballer have to ring their parents? What has to do football with war? What a football player has to do with armed soldiers involved in killings for money. Why not suggesting of ringing the parents or the wife of a fireman who died to save a child's life instead? This would make more sense dear Ian Wright.

No guys, this England will never win the FIFA world cup; we must know and accept that. English sportsman and sportswoman are great as individuals but not as team players, I use the 2012 Olympic Games to confirm my point. Also great individuals are the Formula 1 racers, or tennis players, or golfers, or snooker pool players, or you name it. The reason of national football constant failure lays underneath a lot of politics which I don't really understand but what I do understand is that our children must be happy and safe to play on the streets and us parents should be able to shout at them from the upstairs window, like the parents of the world cup champions done to their kids. Politicians and bureaucrats are wrapped in cotton wool, but some scratches in our children's knees will do only good.

So, close the streets to danger not to children.

Antonello Atzori

P.s. Worth to mention:

·        No nation to date has ever won the world cup with a foreign coach, ever, just in case the FA decides to hire another foreign manager.

·        The best national football teams have strong Christian beliefs, this means they come from free Democratic nations, their players show their Christian faith regularly when performing on the pitch. If you think this is a little detail you are wrong, terribly wrong. Only nations where the population is for the majority of Christian faith and Democratic views wins world cups. Same for every other sport. Not only that, it is scientifically proven that people who believe in God cope better with anxiety which makes them attain peak performances.

The story of Flexi Fence

2011
Back then I used to run a self-employed gardening business and sometimes I would be asked by my customers to change just 1 fence panel and I would have to ask for help from a friend in order to come along with me and lift the panel up to slide it into the gravel post grooves. So one day, annoyed by the un-cost-effectiveness of the traditional panels, I went home and at the back of my garden I cut an ordinary fence panel into 2 exact halves, put 2 hinges in the middle and with the help of my wife Zoe I called it Flexi Fence. At that point I wasn't sure what to do with it, but together with my wife we agreed it would be worth submitting the idea for patent, and so I did. I then found a great patent lawyers firm in Birmingham where we live and I have to mention their name, Barker Brettell, and they took care of all the legal requirements, they wrote a book! The first step was accomplished, the idea was legally covered.

I was so excited; I had the feeling to be the one who made a revolution in the fencing industry.

The next step was to brand it properly, so the Flexi Fence had to have a trademark. I commissioned the design to 4 different graphic designers and I never seen so much rubbish in my life, not a single slightly good design. So I sat down on my day off and worked out my own design which you can see here.

A hinge in the middle, with two F's mirrored, designed by me with Paint, an ordinary software supplied on my pc. I didn't have a clue about how to register my trademark but I searched online, I found the trademark website and registered my trademark.

Next step was to find a fencing manufacturer to produce it. After the product was covered I started to go around fencing manufacturers in the Midlands and soon realized how many (but not all) of them are so narrow minded, they couldn't work out how that hinged fence would be good for the fencing market and now I know why, they lived all their lives producing flat wood, they will never see it differently, foldable or handy. They can't, it is not their fault. In the end I found one manufacturer, it was more like I was convincing him to do it then him be happy to do it, but at least I had a manufacturer, prices and everything else.

With prices, design and all related things in hand, I started to contact garden centres in my local area, altogether I visited 5 of which 4 wanted to stock the Flexi Fence, not a bad start for sure and this made me more and more sure it was a good idea and that I was doing the right thing. I thought about applying to the Dragon's Den too, and so I did. I applied to go there, I did the business plan and everything needed, filled all the forms, ready. All I had to do now was to wait for an answer, I didn't have finances and the Dragons would have been able to boost the Flexi Fence.

At the same time I sent a letter and brochure explaining what the Flexi Fence was to the main buyer at B & Q, and you know what? He replied! Not only he replied, he suggested to contact the garden fencing suppliers they use, if their suppliers were happy to produce the panel B & Q would buy it. And so I did. I was given the email address of the MD of one of the biggest fencing manufacturers in UK, and approached him, it was around September-October 2011 and everything seemed to be going the right way.

I have a daughter, Ella May, at that time 3, and a son, Luca, at that time 1.

Luca was growing ok, a nice chubby little boy, always smiling and clapping and playing. One night in Autumn he was ill, he started to fit really badly and was rushed to the hospital by ambulance, he never came back the same. He started to lose his skills, he wasn't playing anymore, he could not even feed himself anymore. I thought he was going to get better, I was wrong. Luca was seriously ill, but we didn't know, nobody did. After months of trips to hospitals we had a diagnosis, Luca suffered from a condition called Infantile Tay Sachs, a rare degenerative hereditary condition which makes the affected child lose all his skills, turn blind, deaf, limiting his life to no more than 4 years of age. My heart was shredded into million bits and spread in the street like confetti.
It was the 7th of February 2012.

After an initial telephone contact by one of BBC Dragon's Den producers, I received an email that I wasn't going to the TV program. Ok I thought. I still had the B & Q contact; I didn’t really need to go to a TV program to make myself better off. After lots of tries and nearly 8 months from the first contact, I managed to arrange a meeting with one of the biggest fencing manufacturers in the UK, appointment booked in June 2012. Meanwhile, Luca was losing all his skills, I was witnessing the most horrible thing a parent can be asked to, take his own child to his grave and not be able to do anything. I used to take him to garden centres with me in my work van; I was spending all the priceless time left I could with him.

I went to the meeting of B & Q manufacturers with a close friend, Darren, an experienced MD. We did all we could to impress the Directors and we left the premises with lots of good hopes, we both had the feeling that this fencing firm would embrace the product and make it work, we were wrong. After a couple of days I received an email saying they were not interested, and that was it. My conclusion was that if you leave flat, you can't see bends and I thought: what's wrong with these manufacturers? Everybody can see the benefits of having a foldable fence panel, how can they not see it? Where's innovation, design, where? They all produce flat panels always in the same way and design, how can this be possible? But yes, it is possible, my opinion is that managers worry about numbers, profits and loss; managers will never embrace an innovation which can make them look stupid for not been able to think about it themselves with all the resources they have. I was tired, really tired about everything. I needed a break from all of this, and so I did, it was June 2012.
In July 2012 I decided not to trade anymore either, I closed my self-employed gardening business and got a job as part time waiter, in this way I could look after Luca in the day and work at night.

Autumn 2012
Then I fought a battle against even narrower minded people which occupy Birmingham City Council's school appeal board panel, a council with 0% success rate on school appeals, a dictatorship. Our daughter was sent to a school too far from home and we couldn’t take her there as now terminally ill Luca wasn’t fit at all to come with us, a cold could kill him. My wife and I fought really hard for the right of our daughter education and our son’s health, national TV and local newspapers highlighted the matter. One day I protested and distributed leaflets on my own outside Birmingham City Council, Luca was with me in his wheelchair. I wrote to everyone who could help us, including Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Prime Minister David Cameron. The Prime Minister also replied and apologized through his office about the troubles we were experiencing. With the help of family and lifetime friend Fiona, Luca’s Nurse Jayne and local Erdington Labour MP Jack Dromey and his supportive team, we won at the third attempt, it was autumn 2012, the only appeal won in Birmingham that year, the first one to win in 12 years after having to go through the process 3 times. A school appeal is like a court appeal, even in the way it is run, you need to contact lawyers, pay them, file lots of documents, it is an endless practice which costs lots of money you will never get refunded.
Time was going past really fast, before I realized I found myself in Acorns Children's Hospice, holding Luca while passing away, he stopped breathing the 02/02/2013 at 4:37am.
In 2013 everything was blury, strange, no much to do, no hospital appointments, no feeding machines, just a surreal silence in the house and a feeling of emptiness in my heart. When Luca was firstly diagnosed, with the help of friends we started a fundraising organization called Luca Loves Life Appeal, all the money we raise goes to Acorns Children’s Hospice, the Birmingham Children's Hospital and other charities across UK as well as we give cash to poor families around the world dealing with terminally ill children but not as lucky as us to benefit from free NHS.

2013
I have experienced health problems myself, all emotionally related; this went on for months, and still does now but I am getting better with time. I have lost weight and felt really weak, but still I kept myself fit by running and doing some weight lifting in the back garden shed. Although I was going through the worst nightmare a human being can experience, I never asked for a day off at work, ever. Fact.
While I was looking after Luca I started to entertain him by playing an old guitar and sing, he loved to hear me doing so. Because I didn't know any cover song I started to write songs for him and now, after he passed away, I recorded all of them in a professional studio, published into a music CD and all the profits go to Luca Loves Life Appeal, the album has 11 songs and is called "Eleven". It had to be done, is now my hobby to go in pubs and clubs to perform the songs purely to raise money for the Appeal.

January 2014, here I am.
This year I want answers, and Flexi Fence is the first one on the list. I don't want to blame Luca for the troubles I was going through, my job, my projects, no, and I am not dead. I come from an Italian Island called Sardinia and we are well known to be stubborn people, me for sure at least.
The following is a copy and paste from my Facebook status I posted at the beginning of the year:

"The New Year 2014.

Welcome 2014, I am glad you arrived. For you 2014 I am determined to see if the Flexi Fence project will work or not, if yes good if not I will scrap everything and that will be it. So, first thing this morning I went to see the manufacturer, on the way there a memory flashed back into my head and it was all about Luca as I used to carry him with me everywhere, even to my business meetings. Anyway, the manufacturer is happy to produce the fence product (even if he was moaning he is too busy and he cannot keep on top of his actual fence orders), then I went to a garden centre I was in touch with. When I first approached that garden centre I was with Luca, he was already diagnosed and ill, but I took him there with me as I used to be with him most of my time, I think it was around June-July 2012, I remember it was really hot and sunny on that day. He slept all the way there and his face was nice and red, happy and deep asleep. I was driving while I looked at him sitting at the front of the van with me and I remember his little face, his tiny hands, his long eyelashes, I parked the van at the garden centre, and I touched his face and kissed him with all the love a dad can give in a kiss, I clearly remember every move.
But today was a little different; to start with it wasn't hot but grey and rainy.
Today on the way there next to me there was an empty seat, I went in that car park, I parked the van and there wasn't Luca's red cheeks, his tiny hands, his long eyelashes, no kisses to be given, no, the seat was empty. No, Luca wasn't there; I parked my van, looked at the disabled spot where I parked when I was with Luca, and burst into tears.
I cleaned my face and then walked into the shop as nothing happened, it was about a year and a half ago last time I have been there, and I asked - Can I speak to the Manager? - The Manger came out, and so we talked about business.

Welcome 2014. I am glad you arrived. And thank you Tay Sachs for ruining my life, for the rest of my days.

Antonello Atzori"

Meanwhile, in my work place I made my way up from part time waiter to a full time business manager. Never give up guys, never give up on yourselves. And so I didn't.
In January 2014 I brought even more innovation to the fencing world. You know when you buy a fence panel there normally is a metal brand with the logo of the fencing manufacturer stapled in the middle; I call it waste of money and I am surprised (but not that much) why fencing companies never thought about cutting that cost? I also know some other manufacturers don’t brand their products because it cost too much, this is totally understandable, so they prefer not to have their trade name on the fences. To cut costs but at the same time have a good finished and branded fence product, what I have done myself is to engrave the Flexi Fence directly into the wood with a mains powered branding iron. A branding iron, that's all you need, 100 pounds for it, and you can engrave an infinite number of panels, front, back, left, right, any way you like it with no waste or environment issues whatsoever. Why finish a FSC approved fence product (FSC - Forest Stewardship Council - means that all the wood used to manufacture the fence panels is from forests that are managed to the highest ecological standards) adding one of the dirtiest things on earth, a piece of tin where your company name is branded on? It is not even cost effective. The biggest mystery of the traditional fencing manufacturers but not my problem for sure.

Flexi Fence branding iron first ever tests, Friday 24th January 2014, 14:30

After 2 months waiting for the fence panels to be manufactured and after having contacted 3 different fencing manufacturers, none of them looked interested in producing the Flexi Fence, they all were shifting the production from week to week making everything even more difficult for me so I did the extreme, I started to buy the wood and doing the panels in my back garden in order to carry on with the pilot project. You can imagine how difficult this was to accept and do but I took the challenge, I have good craftsman skills and attentive eye to detail so I knew it was possible for me to manually do some Flexi Fence panels, and so I did them the same way it all started back in 2011, in my back garden. Against all the odds, against everything and everyone, on my days off work I built the panels, it was Wednesday the 26th of February; the panels were perfectly designed, constructed and finished on Monday the 3rd of March. I delivered them to the garden centre on Wednesday the 5th of March and waited for a phone call telling me I have sold 1. No fingers crossed, nothing is to do with luck, I just waited for the garden centre manager’s phone call. Meanwhile I lived my life as usual, I kept working my shifts as restaurant manager, I have been rehearsing my songs, took Ella my daughter to school and back every day, took the dog for walks, myself for runs, visited Luca’s graveyard every day and said little prayers for him. And waited for a phone call.

Week one, no phone call.
Week two, no phone call.
Week three, no phone call.
Week four, no phone call.

So I rang the garden centre myself and spoke to the manager directly, my intention was to collect the panels and use the wood for my barbeque but I didn’t have to; the manager said they sold 2 panels! You can imagine my face at that moment J and what went through my head in a split of a second. After not even a month since the fence was in the market, in between the 3rd and 4th week it sold 2. Amen. There is a gap in the market and I just proved it, whether fencing manufacturers like it or not Flexi Fence is filling that gap, this means that business wise Flexi Fence can be converted into £ pounds. Fact, not just my opinion. In actual fact Flexi Fence is not just filling a gap, it has created an exclusive market with no competition.

After reading this story and knowing what it took me to prove the world I was right against all the odds you should agree Flexi Fence is a reality and not just my dream, I am now even more convinced that it could be distributed to the 2.500 garden centres across the UK and because of its transportability if Flexi Fence was being sold in places like Argos for example, or in supermarket chains like ASDA or Tesco, surely it would sell more than just one or two, in addition the panel could also be produced in nice PVC plastic with lifetime guarantee. I know Flexi Fence has made a revolution in the way fence panels are purchased and installed for ever, its only limit is the narrow minded world around it but Flexi Fence and I do not have limits and I am amazed on how people can make your life so hard for no reasons, why? Why do that? I look back now and  I still don’t understand but is not my problem anymore.

At the moment I don’t hold the necessary resources to get the best out of the Flexi Fence and for this reason I am looking for an investor with the potential to distribute Flexi Fence nationwide. If you have what it takes feel free to contact me enquiries@flexifence.co.uk. No time wasters please, I have better things to do in life, like help terminally ill children and their families.

Thank you for reading.

Can you do this with an ordinary flat panel?

This guy has worked out his way to fix the problem, so do you still think there is no demand for Flexi Fence? Another thing, even if you wanted to book B & Q for a delivery (but you must spend at least 100 pounds plus you still have to pay for the delivery, unless you spend more than 250 pounds), you are ringing an 0845 number :) HAPPY DAYS
Aaaaaaaa I was forgetting, once you have paid for the panel to be delivered in your front drive curb, who is going to slot it in?

Thank you for reading.
